Re: Developing a talent at an older age
You do need to have a degree of natural ability and/or the build/body mechanics if you want to develop a physical talent to a high level though.

Re: Developing a talent at an older age
I started competitive Olympic weightlifting at 29, at an age where most weightlifters have won their medals and retired!

With that said there are plenty of weightlifters at Commonwealth level who compete and win medals in their late 30s or at 40. May never make it as world class but then again, Taranenko won the European championships at 40. (he was one of the best ever mind you)

I agree for most people a lack of hours would be the problem, I'm fortunate enough to be able to train full time and have no other commitments/responsibilities (no dependents, no debt) so I can dedicate as much time as I need to the sport.

Re: Developing a talent at an older age
About how sheer practice can make massive strides in becoming very good at a Sport. At the end of the day though it is like most things usually a combination of the two. (like nature/nuture or innatism/cognitivism).
You can practice as much as you want but some i will have better natural gifts and be better than you soo there will be a ceiling to development. Look at Usain Bolt - naturally gifted with extreme pace, that to an extent cant be taught.

Re: Developing a talent at an older age
I watched a VSauce video a few months ago where they said while it does take 10'000 hours of practice to become and expert at any given task, it only takes 20 hours to become proficient...after 20 hours your gains in that task become incrementally smaller and smaller hence the reason it takes so long to become an expert.

Most languages, musical instruments and anything else you want to put your mind to can be done in 20 hours of dedicated study and practice...

Not really on topic but I wonder when your mindset transitions from not wanting to make an issue or excuse about your advancing years to boasting about it as in the sense of "I'm 76 you know and still have all my own teeth".

You sometimes hear of people coming to ACTING late in life.
There is always a call in the movies for older gentlemen with ravaged lived in faces like an old boot that hint at a life of hard living , neglect and abuse.
When can you start?

Make it an e-book Banjo, then we don't have to rush out anywhere to not buy it, we can not buy it from the comfort of our own homes.

I mean, buy it.

Re: Developing a talent at an older age
At the ripe old age of 50 I took a creative writing course, and thoroughly enjoy it.

I am now semi-retired, at the ripe old age of 58 and spend 2 or 3 hours a day writing. I have not sought to publish any of my short stories or Poems but have derived enormous pleasure from getting my thoughts and ideas down on paper, so to speak. I have shared them with family and friends who generally think they suck!

My latest project which has taken the better part of 18 months is a novel based on the life of a middle aged divorcee West Ham fan who strikes it rich in an unusual way. I am one third into it and my inspiration comes and goes as does my creativity. I am attempting to write 1000 words each day and have managed that for the past 2 weeks. My god it takes discipline.

When it's published I'll let WHO know and you can all rush out and buy it.

1500 people were right then. The only way a chicken burger would take off would be if you lobbed at at someone.

"Colonel Sanders opened his first KFC restaurant aged 65. He did alright for himself!"

He was obviously just a big chicken before that.
